Vision
All students will be actively engaged in reading, writing, and communicating to build a strong foundation in literacy that continues to develop and contribute to their future successes.
Belief/Philosophy Statement for Reading
(Statements on Writing and Communications will be addressed in the next two years)
In the Riverview School District, teachers believe that reading is constructing meaning from text. This belief drives the teacher's practice resulting in readers who interact with the text and use strategies to read in a variety of text. Teachers use instructional strategies and program approaches that ensure student success as a reader. The RSD reading curriculum is aligned with the State of Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements and Grade Level Expectations.
This Belief/Philosophy Statement is supported by the International Reading Association’s (IRA) statement, “…Honoring Children’s Rights to Excellent Reading Instruction,” which follows:
We believe that all children have a right to:
- Early reading instruction that meets individual needs
- Reading instruction that builds skill and the desire to read increasingly complex materials
- Well-prepared teachers who keep their skills up to date
- A variety of books and other reading material in their classrooms, and in school and community libraries
- Assessment that identifies strengths as well as needs and involves students in making decisions about their own learning
- Supplemental instruction from professionals specifically prepared to teach reading
- Instruction that involves parents and communities in students’ academic lives
- Instruction that makes meaningful use of first-language skills
- Equal access to instructional technology
- Classrooms that optimize learning opportunities
