ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
The Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal has announced its Girls' Athlete of the Week.

The Varsity Girls Soccer team!

And they could not choose just one, so they chose them all!

"Seven different Red Wolve(s) players either had a goal or an assist this past Thursday in their home 7-0 blowout of Cedar Park Christian, so we’re going to recognize the entire team with the Athlete of the Week award. Coach Alex Hickox’s team is out to another strong start this fall, at 5-0-1, and looks primed to make another run to the postseason within the Cascade Conference. And younger players are helping in the efforts, with Hickox offering special recognition to his sophomore and freshmen players who participated in the game on the team’s Facebook page. Among them, freshman Treena Bolin and sophomore Natalie Amble scored goals in the game, Bolin and sophomore Makena Guenther had assists, and freshman goalie Jessi Polacek earned her first varsity shutout in her first varsity game."

CROSS-COUNTRY
This report from Coach McDowell recaps the Boys and Girls performance at the Bellevue Invite, from this past Saturday morning.

"This meet has been a traditional meet for us, having competed at this meet for most of the past 25 years. Due to the large number of teams at this meet (57 schools this year), the meet has the varsity level athletes run in flights. That means each team’s #1s and #2s run together, and the #3s and #4s run together etc. Historically, this meet has most of teams that are larger classification size schools. For the past decade, we have been good enough that we are usually one of the top “smaller size” teams. This year, was no different. The varsity boys finished 11th overall and the varsity girls finished 14th overall.

*However, if you look at non-3A/4A schools, the boys were 1st and the girls were 2nd (behind the defending state champions).*

Going with all our success, the runners that have been in the program for years have been become very goal oriented and are always wanting more. Now that is a great thing to have as it is the best way for the program to be successful and to continue to grow. However, it is difficult to make them happy with their performances. That would be the case with today. The coaches thought that today went well. Many of the athletes felt they should have done better. That’s a good problem to have.

Our Athletes of the Meet for today were Austin Ward, Cade LaTurner, Kyle Tracy, Elsie Dombek and Jenna Young. We had quite a number of Honorable Mentions: Lance Stupfel, Brennan LeBlanc, Jake Ward, Noah Pace, Kelly Hall, Alicia Krivanek and Hannah Brabec also had exceptional races. So congrats to them and the rest of the squad.

Next Saturday, we are off on a new adventure as our top half of our squad travel to Portland, OR for a meet that is called the Nike Portland XC meet. To say this meet is huge would be a disservice to huge. There are 162 teams (from 8 different states plus British Columbia). There are different varsity races (based upon how good the teams are) to accommodate the number of teams. The meet is run on the golf course that is on the inside of the race track at Portland Meadows horse race track. Should be fun. Looking forward to having another good meet to write about next weekend on the long bus ride home."

CROSS-COUNTRY
A report from Coach McDowell on Saturday's South Whidbey Invitational!

"On Saturday, the CXC squad competed at the South Whidbey Invite. We had planned to go to the Apple Ridge meet in Yakima like we had for the last previous years. However, the air quality has been an issue over there and we couldn’t risk going to a meet where it might get cancelled or have an impact on the races. We have been to this race site for many years but not for this particular meet. For the veterans, it was “weird” to see hard, dry and dusty ground instead of the soft squishy mud that is usually present in late October.

This meet was our first 5K of the season, involving over 40 teams of all classification sizes. Due to this, the varsity races are split based upon classification sizes (2A and smaller compared to 3A and bigger).

Our varsity girls in the 2A and smaller race did exactly what we had hoped for. They went out and dominated the competition. Led by Elsie Dombek in 5th and Kelly Hall in 6th, then 9th, 10th, 13th and 15th.

We decided to opt our top 5 boys up to the larger school race for a little extra competition. Grant Van Valkenburg certainly rose to the challenge of the extra competition. He led a pack of seven runners early on. At two miles, he was sitting third just behind the lead pair. Then he hit the long downhill where he just ran away from them to win by 12 seconds. Ben Benson was our second finisher by placing 11th. As a whole, the varsity boys raced well to place 6th out of the 12 schools.

There were plenty of good performances in the JV races as well. The large size schools have lots of quality runners in those races as well. Our veterans got to compare their times from previous years on this course. The rookies got introduced to running 3.1 miles.

Our Athletes of the Meet were Bryce Hefner, Kaden Overman, Jackson Frank, Hannah Brabec and Mary McLelland. A good mixture of vets and rookies. Guess Grant has to do a little more to be named an Athlete of the Meet!"

CROSS-COUNTRY - Saturday, September 9
This report comes courtesy from Coach McDowell as the Red Wolves finished with their best performance to date at the Tahoma Relay.

"The CXC squad competed at the Tahoma Relays which was held at Lake Wilderness Park in Maple Valley. There were 40 schools in attendance of all classification sizes and the schools arrange their athletes into five runners per relay team. Each runner runs 3000m and includes about a half mile of narrow single track trail as well as about 70m of running through knee to mid thigh high portion of the lake. Because of both these circumstances, it is difficult to compare this 3000m course with other 3000m courses.

Every year, we run “The A-Team” which is our best three boys and best two girls. Medals are given out for the top 10 squads (out of over 200 squads). We have some really good squads for Tahoma and today we topped them all. Our previous highest finisher was by the 2013 version of the “The A-Team” of Logan Orndorf, Colton Green, Quinn Radbourne, Olivia Waterman and Diana Carr finishing fourth. The 2017 version of Grant Van Valkenburg, Ben Benson, Emmett Klaiber, Elsie Dombek and Kelly Hall ran five outstanding legs to finish in 2nd place.

It was a superb effort by the five of them.

We also ran eight other squads with names like the “Killer B’s”, “Senior Power” and “Super Sophs”.

Our Athletes of the Meet were Ben Benson, Brennan LeBlanc, Calvin Nelson, Kate Vergillo and Ginger Van Valkenburg. Congrats to the five of them for their efforts today.

Next Saturday, our plan is to venture to Yakima for the Apple Ridge meet. However, the final decision on that will depend upon the air quality in that region. It has been a successful meet for us so hopefully that will still be possible."

CEDARCREST CROSS-COUNTRY WIN IN ARLINGTON!
The Red Wolves Boys and Girls' Cross-Country teams each came away as Overall Team Winners yesterday in the River Meadows Park Meet in Arlington. Cedarcrest defeated all other teams in the Cascade Conference.

Excerpts from Coach Bruce McDowell's report will complete our Daily Bulletin for today!

"Today, the CXC competed in their first meet of the season. With the smoky and hazy weather we have had this week, we weren’t exactly sure that we were going to be able to race today. In fact, yesterday’s workout was 35 minutes of running through the interior of the CHS building. Not exactly ideal, but we made it work. So today’s good overall performance was encouraging considering our Tuesday situation.

The girls’ squad were the overall team winner today. The girls were led by Kelly Hall (3rd), Elise Dombek (6th), Alicia Krivanek (8th) and Mary Cate Babcock (9th). The CXC girls have won the last nine Conference Championships. And it appears that our girls team is shaping up to be the elite team in the conference. The CXC girls’ had about 1/3 of today’s runners. We put 6 girls in the top 13. We put 8 girls in the top 16. We put 10 girls in the top 20.

The boys’ squad also came away as overall team winner. Grant Van Valkenburg was the individual winner and was followed by Ben Benson (3rd), Emmett Klaiber (6th), Patrick McCabe (9th) and Justin Young (10th). We put 5 in the top 10. We put 7 in the top 17. We put 10 in the top 21. So once again, right about 1/2 of the runners in the top groups of finishers. The boys have won 4 of the past 6 Conference Championships. So once again and similar to the girls, the boys team is shaping up to be the Conference favorite.

As in previous years, we (the coaches and the captains) will name Athletes of the Meet for every meet. The criteria is based upon the athlete’s exceeding expectations, team ranking as well as critical performances influencing the overall team scores. “Congrats” and “Good Job” to our “winners”. They are Patrick McCabe, Brady Shaw, Sawyer Swart, Cecelia Kiesow and Aryia Farnworth."
