Tolt Middle School and PARADE Named Gold Star Schools
by Governor Jay Inslee
Washington state Governor Jay Inslee recently announced that 270 schools, within 115 school districts, had earned Gold Star status in signing up significant numbers of middle school students for College Bound Scholarship opportunities. The Riverview School District is proud to announce that Tolt Middle School and the PARADE program at the Riverview Learning Center has earned Gold Star distinction for the 2017-18 school year!
Over 30,000 of last year’s eighth graders, in the State of Washington, signed up for the College Bound Scholarship, and both Tolt and PARADE exceeded the state’s average sign-up rate of 71 percent.
Eligible students must sign up in middle school, by June 30 of their eighth grade year, to receive the early commitment of state funding. In combination with other state aid, the College Bound Scholarship covers tuition at public college rates, with students required to enroll in an eligible college within one year of their high school graduation.
Data from College Bound shows that lower-income students who sign up for the scholarship graduate from high school and enroll in college at higher rates than other lower-income peers. After the first cohort of College Bound scholarship students graduated high school in 2012, the four-year high school graduation rate for College Bound scholarship signees has been consistent with the statewide averages, but climbed more than 10 percentage points higher than for those lower-income students who were eligible but did not sign up.
Riverview’s sign-up rate was 86%.
“I commend Riverview, the district team, their partners, and the hardworking teachers, counselors, and building staff who contributed to your success,” wrote Governor Jay Inslee, in a message to the district. “Students in Riverview have greater opportunities because of your efforts and leadership.”
