Message from the Superintendent

Welcome to the 2008-2009 School Year
Welcome to the Riverview School District and the 2008-2009 school year. I hope you share my excitement for the beginning of the new school year. The Riverview School Board Members, Greg Bawden , Carol Van Noy, Dan Pflugrath, Lori Oviatt and Danny Edwards, extend their best wishes for a great year to all of our students, parents, employees, volunteers and community.
With the diligent work of the school administrators, teachers, and support staff, we have continued to increase student performance on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). In fact, Riverview School District has experienced some of the greatest improvements in test scoring in the state of Washington with all of our schools ranking among the top 15% in improvement since 2001. We credit our staff, our focus on student improvement, our ongoing staff development, our continued Strategic Plan, and our excellent parent and community support.
We want to thank the community for the high level of voter approval for our bond issue, maintenance and operation levy and technology levy. With the support of the bond issue, we will address major facility needs at every school over the next four years. This summer we have connected to the Carnation sewer system; painted the interior and installed new flooring throughout Stillwater Elementary School; and replaced theatre seats in the auditorium and flooring throughout Cedarcrest High School . Also, we are in the process of constructing a new track, grandstands, football and soccer fields and extensive remodeling and additions at Tolt Middle School. Cedarcrest High School is having the gymnasium remodeled as well as classrooms and office additions. We are planning for the construction of a new baseball field and additional grandstand seating and parking at Cedarcrest High School , along with the Riverview Learning Center in Carnation for our PARADE home school program and our alternative middle school and high school programs.
As we look forward to this year, we will continue to emphasize teacher training opportunities with our joint Teacher Summer Institute with the Snoqualmie Valley School District . We will continue our seven-year partnership with the Center for Educational Effectiveness to improve student performance. Our annual technology improvements include a new fiber network connecting all school and sites to increase our district bandwidth, and new projectors and document cameras for middle and high school classrooms.
Our mission is to educate children but we can't do it by ourselves. We will continue to look to you for support, involvement, and ideas to improve our schools. Please take the time to become involved in the education of all children, and work with us to make the 2008-2009 school year a great learning experience.
