Dan Mahowald Receives 2009 WASA Community Recognition Award
District parent Dan Mahowald (right), shown here with Conrad Robertson, Riverview Superintendent, was recently honored at a Washington Association of School Administrators' (WASA) luncheon for his service to the Riverview School District as an outstanding community volunteer.
As Mr. Robertson wrote:
"In 2005 a community member came to me with an idea of connecting highly motivated students to the business community.
Dan Mahowald, founder of connectedEDU, launched his program in May 2006 at Cedarcrest High School. The program's mission is to develop the next generation of global leaders; leaders that will have a profound impact on our collective future.
The program and curriculum connects outstanding high school students to the business community and teaches them to interact, conduct value exchanges, and learn from the world's top leaders. The classroom consists of ten one-hour sessions covering the curriculum elements of (1) organizational dynamics; (2) strategy and planning; (3) financial performance statements and metrics; and (4) ethics and high integrity decision making. To complete the program, students must develop and present a business improvement plan to a Pacific Northwest Fortune 100 Company. They make this presentation on the company's premises, to their leadership team, interacting directly with some of their top executives.
Dan completely volunteers his time to teach students during their Advisory Period or after school and evenings. This is his third year working with Cedarcrest, and currently has 16 students involved with companies such as Microsoft, Nike, Weyerhaeuser, PACCAR, Starbucks and Boeing. Students must apply to be considered for this program.
According to Dan - connectedEDU is an idea and a dream with a simple and straightforward purpose. We have a phenomenal opportunity to open doors for those students that have intense motivation and drive to do great things with their lives, to be the next generation of global leaders. Our vision and our program will serve as a catalyst for that dream.
Dan Mahowald is an immeasurable inspiration to our students and our community. It is my privilege to nominate Dan Mahowald for the WASA Community Recognition Award."
