Information Regarding Making Up Missed School Days
January 17, 2007
The Riverview School District Board of Directors approved the Calendar Committee’s recommendations at their January 9th meeting to make up one (1) school day during January; four (4) days in February during mid-winter break; and any additional days at the end of the school year.
The School Board also supported the district requesting a waiver from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for the maximum number of emergency closure days. Under a recently amended law, when the Governor has declared a state of emergency, school districts that were closed in counties where the emergency was declared may not have to make up the days related to the closure. This only applies to the floods in November and the windstorm in December, not snow days.
Riverview qualifies to apply for six days during the flood and windstorm. Waived days that are granted by OSPI may be used at the end of the year. However, we want to provide a quality education for our students with as many days as possible, while also understanding family and staff needs if we go longer in June. Our unofficial goal is to end school on Friday, June 22nd. The school board will be making a formal decision in March.

Student learning and academic
achievement were uppermost in the decision to cancel mid-winter break. The
additional four days at this time of the year were crucial to meet grade
level standards, and prepare for spring WASL, AP classes, and graduation.
Students who have vacation or travel commitments during mid-winter break
will not be adversely penalized for that time off. Please follow-up with
your child’s school for an attendance waiver and make-up assignments.
We thank the many parents who phoned and emailed the district with their comments and support, and we thank all of you for your patience in this unusual weather season.
Sincerely,
Conrad
